*In 1948 Taliaferro would complain to Herman Wells, who then struck a deal with the Gables’ owner: Taliaferro and a date would visit the Gables each evening for a week, and if their presence did not drive away white customers, the Gables would integrate. The Gables quickly became known as the place to rub elbows with the football star; white students flocked there, and the Gables integrated. In 1949 George Taliaferro would be the first black to be drafted in the National Football League.
